It was a learning experience for me to see how much work is involved in taking pictures of my dog, Loki. Karen had an incredible sensitivity and lots of patience to get the right shots, loved the moment, she is great, thank you Karen.

Quick Answers About Your Pet Photography Session

How long does a pet session take?

Most pet sessions last about 1 hour. We take breaks as needed to keep your pet comfortable and stress-free.

Do you retouch pet photos?

Yes. Retouching is especially important for black-coated dogs — I use professional techniques to make their fur and eyes pop for crisp, beautiful images.

Do you offer indoor or outdoor sessions?

Both! We can photograph outdoors at my Agoura Hills studio property, or on location shoots at scenic spots nearby.

What should I bring?

Please bring your pet’s favorite treats and squeaky toys to help get their attention during the shoot. Also bring a leash or travel crate so your pet feels secure while we choose images, plus a water bowl. Walking your dog before the session also helps them relax.

When will I see my photos?

You’ll have your ordering appointment right after the photo shoot. Final delivery varies depending on whether you choose prints, albums, or digital images.

What if my pet is nervous?

I offer a quick phone consultation before the session to discuss your pet’s needs. If studio lights may frighten them, you can practice at home with small flashes to prepare.

Shari D. Pet Photography Testimonial - Karen Vaisman
★★★★★

I called Karen because I needed photographs of my dogs and had seen her work online. There was some urgency to my request, and Karen was very understanding and was able to quickly accommodate me, which was a huge relief under the circumstances. She was great with the dogs and suggested I bring family members to assist, which made all the difference. Karen really captured my dogs' personalities. I couldn't have asked for better results. I'm so thankful for Karen's professionalism. The photos are gorgeous and I have memories I'll cherish forever.

Being a pet-lover my whole life has left a special place in my heart to do my best to capture the love in your pet's soulful eyes in a beautiful pet portrait. Not only do I love to photograph animals, dogs, cats, and horses, but I also love to create artwork and creative montages of them.

It's not just a pet photo, It's a story-Telling Dog portrait - As Pet Photographers We understand Our Pets are Family

I have had so many calls before yours...people want to remember those special moments with their loyal friends. I get it! I want to do that for you. Your special animal buddy has quirks, habits, expressions.

He looks at you in that certain way when he just wants love (or maybe that treat you promised)!

What does pet photography entail?

Pet photography entails quick reflexes and a good eye to capture that fleeting moment. It happens in a split second and it is really hard to capture with your mobile phone. You have to be fast with a pet to catch that fleeting glance. Oh yes, and the light has to be just right too! I relish the challenge of capturing that "look" you, as “pet parents,” want to memorialize in your portrait photography and turn it into your own personal work of art.

How much does it cost to get professional photos of your dog?

Pet photography is personal. Depending on what type of session you want, it all starts with the session fee based on time and if it is on location, outdoor, or a portrait photography studio session. We recommend an hour session so your dog will stay focused and not get too tired. We interview you to find out your dog’s personality, if he/she is fearful of flashing lights and if treats or toys work as incentive. Sometimes a family member is useful to get your dog to look directly at the camera.

  • Do you want prints or digital files as your product?

  • Do you want wall art, gallery wrapped canvas or an album?

  • What size prints

  • How many do you want?

  • Do you want custom framing?

  • Do you want custom cards of your pet?

So to answer the question on cost, I would need answers from you. All our work is custom and beautifully retouched as we are a boutique studio specializing in pet projects. We have an image session fee plus a la carte pricing. Most of my clients invest starting at $700 and up. Give us a call to discuss your ideas or we can set up a consultation for you to come in and see what products you might like (sample gallery) to envision your treasured result of gorgeous images of your beloved pet! My Southern California Pet Photography Studio is located In My Residential Studio (Thousand Oaks Area) for your Dog Portraits

My pet portrait studio is a residential studio. You and your pet will feel right at home in this comfortable setting. We can photograph your dog or cat indoors, or outside in my fenced garden. As a seasoned pet photographer, I get down on the floor and take photos from your dog or cat’s vantage point.

Pet Portraits Design Consultation - Ideas to Consider

I am happy to set up an in-person, or telephone pet portrait design consultation to create a beautiful portrait of your beloved pet. It is always helpful to discuss your ideas in advance to customize "the look" of your pet photo to your personal tastes, including colors, backgrounds, indoor or outdoor setting. We will discuss:

  • Your pet's temperament

  • Pet’s Size

  • Animal Coloring

  • Favorite Animal Toys

  • Dog or Cat Photo Props

  • With a collar or without?

  • Is your pet frightened by a "flashing light?" (You may want to try this at home).

  • Is your dog best behaved in the morning or afternoon? (optimal time for our portrait session).

  • Would YOU like to be included in the photo as well?

  • Would you like your pet on a table or on the ground?

  • Perhaps you have a helper that might like to join in to help in the session.

  • Do you have multiple pets you would like to photograph together? I am also able to make a composite two animals together, in case they may not enjoy sitting side by side (i.e. a cat and a dog)!

  • Would you like a posed session in the studio for your pet portraits?

  • Would you prefer a more natural portrait session (running outdoors)?

  • Photographing your pet at your home or another location is available as well (location fee applies).

  • Have more questions? Give me a call! (818) 991-7787

Pamper Your Pet.
Preparation is Key for your Pet Portraits!

Grooming your pet prior to our session will help him sparkle right before his the pet portrait session! Bring his brush to be prepared. Please bring his favorite treats to help coax him into some great poses for his session.  Think about if you would like him with, or without a collar as well. I can always retouch out the collar after our portrait session. Does he have a favorite squeaky toy he will look at or a bag of treats that will make him look when I shake it? It is always a good idea to walk your dog, just before the session and to bring water and food, just in case.

"The Art of portraits Touch Up"

I am a master photographer and retouch artist in Southern California with over two decades of experience. My love for animals combined with my passion for art leaves a very soft spot in my heart for pet portraits. I love working with animals. After our session, I will artistically retouch your pet's portrait.

  • Do you have a black dog, with black eyes that you have never quite been able to see in a photograph very well in pet portraits? I will digitally enhance your pet's fur so you will see the detail in his/her eyes...just enough to make you say "Awwwww."

  • Does your white poodle always seem to have a "dirty mustache look," or perhaps leaky eyes that stain his fur? Not to worry, I can clean all of that up with Photoshop!

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. I'm known throughout the Los Angeles area pet photographers for the fine art of retouching. Please visit my before and after gallery to see samples of my retouching work.  All the images in the gallery above have been fully retouched.
