A UK digital passport photo has its own rules, separate from the printed 35×45mm photo — and the online application checks them automatically. A photo that looks fine to you can still fail on lighting, background, or framing, and the refusal arrives weeks later.

No shadows on your face or behind you. Uneven light from a window or an overhead fluorescent tube is the single most common reason a phone or counter photo is refused.
