I needed to renew my UK Passport, and due to Brexit and the exit from the EU, requirements had changed. My first and second attempts were a dismal failure — wrong size and I looked dreadful. What the Photo Code Screening Actually Checks
A UK digital passport photo has its own rules, separate from the printed 35×45mm photo — all UK passports use facial biometrics, and the online application checks them automatically. A photo that looks fine to you can still fail on lighting, background, or framing, and the refusal arrives weeks later.
The photo code screening runs the same rules before you apply — not after. If your photo passes here, it has already cleared the checks HM Passport Office runs.
Your application is still reviewed by HM Passport Office in the normal way.
No shadows on your face or behind you. Uneven light from a window or an overhead fluorescent tube is the single most common reason a passport or ID photo is refused.
A plain light-coloured background with nothing behind you — no patterns, textures, objects, or other people.
Head, shoulders and upper body in frame, facing the camera, and not cropped by you — HM Passport Office crops it. Eyes open and visible, neutral expression, mouth closed, nothing covering the face.
In colour, unedited, at least 600 × 750 pixels, between 50KB and 10MB, and taken within the last month — even if you look the same as your last passport.
Clients come to me after refusals every week, and it is almost always the same two things: shadows, or a background that isn't plain and light.
Recently a client arrived with a UK passport application that had been sent back because the photo, taken at a shipping-store counter, was too dark. Nobody there had checked it against anything — they handed her a file and sent her on her way.
